Rev. Anita Hill
- St. Paul, MN
Coldwell Banker Burnet Realty is my full time gig after a lifetime of ministry at St Paul-Reformation Lutheran in Saint Paul. I also provide Protestant services weekly at Sholom Home, pulpit supply, and short term half-time sabbatical coverage occasionally. After a quarter century of love and life with my dear Janelle, at-home time with family and friends is best! I never thought I'd be called Mama, Grandma, or Mother-in-law. Ours is a family only God could have created!
What brings you joy in your ministry?
Serving on my synod's Candidacy Committee and the Board of Trustees of my Alma Mater, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities are deep ministry connections for me. I serve on the Racial Equity Team and Sanctuary Support Team of Grace University Lutheran, Minneapolis, where my family joined in 2012.
Who inspires you in ministry or seminary?
I am inspired by the many TBGL seminarians who are now able to go through their studies openly as they respond to God's call to Word and Sacrament ministry.
What are your interests outside of ministry?
Walking( especially with our little Cairn-Poodle, Toby. Reading mystery novels, all things home as a realtor.
Best meal you've ever eaten?
All you could eat boiled shrimp in a little dive in Southern Louisiana. The tables were covered in red and white checkered oil cloth and each had a hole in the middle where we could push off the peeled shrimp shells. Wait staff just kept bringing more. My high school friends nicknamed me "Shrimp" which covered both my favorite food and my height. Sadly, I am now allergic to shellfish and cannot eat my favorite meal any longer.
I grew up in Louisiana and Mississippi and first met a Lutheran during high school in the little town of Crystal Springs, MS. After graduating Mississippi State University (decidedly not 'Ole Miss), I moved North to the University of Michigan, where I worked in hospital administrative services. Seminary studies brought an MA in Religious Studies followed by an MDiv a decade later, both at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, Minnesota. I was blessed to serve St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church, Saint Paul, MN for 30 years, the community that called me and ordained me "irregularly" in 2001.
Did you always want to be clergy?
Coming out brought me to the Lutheran church in 1974. The gracious welcome and support of Lord of Light Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor, Michigan brought God's call for my life into focus. As I listened to the horrific stories of church exclusion and abuse many LGBT people have experienced, I wanted to help others also experience the Lutheran hospitality of embrace and engagement in the life of the church.
