Rev. Caleb Crainer
- Los Angeles, CA
St. Andrew's Lutheran Church
What brings you joy in your ministry?
I enjoy preaching, there, I said it. I find the process of looking at a text and looking at our world to be incredibly creative and exciting. I consider it a privilege to know my congregation and what sorts of images/metaphors/stories will resonate with them.
Who inspires you in ministry or seminary?
Envelope Pushers. I'm always inspired by people who will speak up and say what everyone is thinking....or what no one has thought of yet. It's the risk that I see God leading people through in those moments that gives me courage to ask bold questions and the fortitude for criticism. If an envelope pusher has a broader mission of finding ways to continually reform our tradition, humility and openness to dialogue will also follow.
What are your interests outside of ministry?
When I'm not at church, I enjoy reading about science, learning to play the banjo, and spending time with family and friends.
Best meal you've ever eaten?
Late-night Schawarma in Be'er Sheva, Israel.
I grew up in a small city in Kansas, attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, followed by the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California and The Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest in Austin, Texas. My pastoral internship was in Minneapolis, Minnesota and in 2012 I was called to serve St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Los Angeles, California.
